Dear reader,

During our first summer, a participant, playing with the name of our new organization, shouted it as a command, “Conductors, Retreat at Medomak!” Looking back, I suppose the name could have been “Conductors, Advance from Medomak” because it has always been about our conductors going out into the world, being authentic, bringing people together, serving communities and the music, and doing good!

My original idea was to gather conductors and aspiring conductors in order to connect, recharge, and re-focus.

  • Taking our participants out of an often competitive and critical world, would help us create an intensive, non-competitive program and engender the sort of contemplation and vulnerability that lead to change.
  • Honoring values that were instilled in me when I was a child at Medomak Camp--remember the other fellow, leave the place better than you found it, and compete not with others, but with yourself and your own goal--would enable us teach conductors to shift their intention to the service of others.
  • Living, laughing, studying, questioning, and working through challenges together as a members of a group, would teach us to be better leaders of a group.
We have helped our participants strengthen their technical skills, elevate their artistic sensibilities, and reach their next level…and beyond.

As a small non-profit organization, we’ve been disciplined about our expenditures and met the challenges of sizable cost increases in lodging and meals, transportation and taxes.

As we celebrate the many achievements of our first 25 years, now is the ideal time for a watershed moment—a breakthrough—as we work to secure our next 25 by ensuring our organization’s permanent service to the people of Maine, the hundreds of institutions and communities where our alumni live and work, and the thousands of lives that are impacted by their commitment to teaching, conducting, and advancing the greater good.

As you’re an alum who has been there for the Retreat in the past, I am deeply grateful and especially moved by your support. I am asking that you help us continue to offer the Conductors Retreat experience with a donation on the occasion of our 25th summer. Any amount will be gratefully received and appreciated.

With my gratitude and warm wishes,
Ken
