William Grant Still Workshop

Details Coming Soon for 2024

The Conductors Retreat at Medomak invites you to the William Grant Still Workshop for Black conductors, now in its third year. We welcome Black conductors, musicians aspiring to conduct, and those curious to know more about a career in conducting. There is no cost to apply or attend, but we ask that you register in advance.

Whether you have not yet had the opportunity to conduct or if you’re already pursuing a conducting career, we encourage you to join us for the Workshop phase of the Initiative. There is no fee to participate, and no minimum or maximum age. We will explore the leadership attributes, skill sets, knowledge base, artistic sensibilities, and personal qualities which are required in order to pursue a life and career as a conductor, and strategies for creating opportunities, pursuing employment, and advancing your career.

The Workshop will be led by Conductors Retreat Founder & Director Kenneth Kiesler, (University of Michigan, GRAMMY nominee, and renowned conducting pedagogue) and will include a preview of the Conductors Retreat experience as well as information about applying for the William Grant Still Scholarship. The WGS Scholarship provides Black conductors and aspiring conductors with full tuition and expenses to participate in the 2024 Retreat (the 28th summer, June 23 – July 7) and receive subsequent mentoring. Only conductors who participate in the Workshop are eligible to apply for this scholarship.

The Conductors Retreat at Medomak, in the perfect world, would be a yearly ritual for me. The seclusion, schedule and activities led me inward inviting me to face personal obstacles. … Along with the distinguished WGSI Fellows, we had the uncomfortable conversations that arise when approaching topics like inclusive programming, cultural appropriation and diversity in art music. These conversations were healthy and productive because they took place in an atmosphere of safety and camaraderie.
